Ildefons “Al” Sienkiewicz
July 23, 2010
Send an Online Condolence

Ildefons “Al” Sienkiewicz, 82, of Wilkes-Barre died unexpectedly Friday, July 23, 2010 at home in the Miners Mills section of the city.

He was born July 15, 1928 in Wilkes-Barre and was the son of the late Charles and Anna (Starzinski) Sienkiewicz.

At a time when success is usually measured by the accumulation of wealth or political power, “Al” found success in the positive ways he touched people’s lives, and how they remembered him, and continue to do so.

When his father was killed in a mining accident in 1938, Al left school to support his family. It wasn’t easy. He found his way doing odd jobs at first for the Miner Hillard Milling Company. He rose through the ranks over the next 28 years eventually becoming a supervisor. While there, he earned his GED and a professional pest control license and developed various training materials and procedures for handling dangerous materials there.

After the mill closed, Al became a supervisor / manager and professional baker at the Dolly Madison Interstate Brands bakery in Kingston. Al helped to develop the “Zingers” and various sweet roll products.

After the devastating flood catastrophe in 1972, Al joined HUD/FEMA. He was instrumental in developing and maintaining emergency housing, not only in the immediate area, but also in places such as Johnstown PA, Xenia OH, Flagstaff Az, and Corpus Christi TX, among others.

Getting a little tired of travel, Al found employment in the garden and hardware center at the Wilkes-Barre Boscov’s. It gave him pleasure just helping people solve their household dilemmas. He also organized a small landscaping business at the time.

Al later decided he wanted to do more to help people. He joined the Area Agency of the Aging. His analysis of nursing homes in Luzerne and Wyoming counties won the attention and praise from then First Lady, Hillary Clinton.

On retirement, Al remained active in the community. Not afraid to speak his mind to politicians, Al was able to influence Harrisburg in starting the farmer’s market food voucher program. He became treasurer of the Elder Coalition, awarded Senior Ombudsman for the Area Agency of the Aging, and joined the Advisory Board for the Area Agency of the Aging.

Al was involved with Leadership Wilkes-Barre, the Sts. Peter & Paul Church Choir, A 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus, Bishop William J. Haffey, Council 302, Wilkes-Barre, and could be seen every Thursday helping out at the stands on Public Square at the Golumb’s Farmers Market. He was an avid gardener (just ask him about his tomatoes), an accomplished fisherman, and loved raising his dogs. Al, with his sense of humor, winner of the Lorne Green look-a-like contest, and matter-of-fact way of plain speaking, will be greatly missed by all those who loved him.

Al was preceded in death by his son Mark, and his brother Charles.

Al is survived by his wife, the former Lillian Walko, at home, son and grandson, David and Nathan, Wilkes-Barre, and his daughter and son-in-law, Joanne Ryno and Ken Ryno, Kunkletown, as well as sisters Ceil Hennigan and her husband Charles, Altoona, and Helen Witt, Levittown, nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be held Tuesday at 9:00 am from the Corcoran Funeral Home, Inc., 20 South Main Street, Plains, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am in SS. Peter & Paul Church, Plains. Interment will be held in the Parish Cemetery, Plains.

July 18, 2010
Send an Online Condolence

Our beloved Jonathan, 20, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, July 18, 2010 following an automobile accident.  He was born on December 21, 1989 in Harding, PA and was an honors graduate of West Side Career and Technical Institute in 2009.  In addition, he was one of twenty persons chosen statewide to join the Trade Union Association apprenticeship program at Luzerne County Community College.  He graduated in 2009.

As a child, Jon’s one main goal and desire was to join the service and serve his country, and on April 14, 2010, he began that journey by completing his final swearing in ceremony for the Navy and leaving for boot camp.  His dream however, was cut short when he suffered a life altering injury during a training exercise just a few weeks before graduation, and was honorably discharged from the service.  Jonathan arrived home believing God had a better plan for his life.

Jonathan had a love for life and accomplished many things in his short time here.  As a young boy, he joined the Boy Scouts of America and worked his way through the ranks, just short of becoming an Eagle Scout, when he had to quit to help provide for his family.  He worked various jobs from delivering papers at the age of 12, to fork lift operator, to his favorite position working with his dad and brother in the family construction company.  He was an avid bowler in the junior bowling leagues, receiving many trophies and representing Modern Lanes three times at state championships.  For many years, he gave up his Saturday mornings to coach the Pee-Wee and Bantam divisions in bowling.  As a student at Wyoming Area, Jonathan ran cross-country, track, and was a member of the tennis team.  He participated in SADD and TATU and was a frequent blood donor for the American Red Cross.  He assisted in collecting food for many food drives, and worked tirelessly for the West Side Food Pantry.  He participated in numerous benefit motorcycle runs.  He was an avid fisherman and hunter, loved to ride his motorcycle, and spend time at his family’s cabin in the mountains.

Jonathan was known for his giving spirit and helpfulness to anyone who needed a hand or an ear.  But most of all Jonathan knew the importance of family.  While attending high school, Jonathan and his brother David worked full time jobs, attended high school and college, to help support their parents while they were both recovering from surgeries.  He believed that as a family, they were a team, and when one member was down, the rest pulled together to lift them up.

Jonathan was preceded in death by his big brother Stephen Micheal, his maternal grandparents, Charlotte and Lemuel Hall, and paternal grandmother Kathleen Sperlazzo.

He will be greatly missed by the love of his life, his fiancé Rychelle Rogers, his parents Stephen and Nancy Sperlazzo, his brother and sister-in-law David and Krystal Sperlazzo, his many, many “adopted” brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles, and friends.

Funeral Service will be held Friday at 9 am at the Corcoran Funeral Home, Inc.  20 South Main Street, Plains.  Interment will be held at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 8 pm.
