Mary M. Kane, 82 of Exeter, passed away Saturday morning at Manor Care Health Services, Kingston.

Born in Exeter, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Sarah (Hurrey) Granahan.

She was a graduate of St. Cecelia’s High School, Exeter, and Pittston Hospital School of Nursing.

Mary was employed as a Registered Nurse for Pittston Hospital.  She was a member of St. Cecelia’s Church, Exeter, and Jacqueline’s, Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus, John F. Kennedy Council 372, Pittston.

She was preceded in death by her husband Paul J. Kane on May 20, 2004, infant daughter Mary Kane, and infant grandson Benjamin Paul Kane.

Surviving are her sons Paul Kane and his wife Cathleen, Rochester, NY, Thomas Kane and his wife Christine, and Michael Kane and his wife Pamela, all of Hanover Twp., grandchildren Matthew and Elizabeth Kane, Rochester, NY, Ryan, Emily, Zachary, and Brenda Kane, all of Hanover Twp.

Funeral will be held Tuesday at 8:45 am from the Corcoran Funeral Home, 20 South Main Street Plains, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am in St. Cecelia’s Church, Exeter, with Father Daniel D. Hitchko, Pastor, officiating.  Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Twp.

Thomas F. Gola, 77 of Wilkes-Barre and Valley Crest Nursing Home, and formerly of Clearwater, FLA, and New Jersey, passed away peacefully Sunday evening at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Joseph and Alice (Surowitz) Gola.

Tom was employed as a dispatcher and bus driver for the Port Authority of New York City, and for Trailways Lines Inc. and Gray Lines in Clearwater, Florida, until his retirement.  He was a member of THE PEER GROUP at Valley Crest Nursing Home, Plains, Twp.

He was preceded in death by his first wife the former Ann Elczyna McDermott in 1982, his second wife the former Trudy Dillon McGee in 1998, infant brother Joseph, and his sister Theresa Szykman in 1986.

Surviving are his sister Eleanor Prushko, Wyoming, Step-Daughters Barbara Komorek, Nanticoke, and Lisa Molina, Florida; step-son James McGee, North Carolina, step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be held Wednesday at 9:00 am from the Corcoran Funeral Home, 20 South Main Street, Plains, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Wilkes-Barre.  Interment will be in Chapel Lawn Memorial Park, Dallas.

Valentino (Tino) C. Andreoli, 69, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away on Thursday, December 10, 2009, in Hospice Care of the VNA, Heritage House, Wilkes-Barre.

Tino was born to the late Carmen and Sophie (Cimino) Andreoli of the Parsons section of Wilkes-Barre on December 7, 1940.  He graduated from James M. Coughlin High School, Class of 1958, and then served in the U.S. Army Reserves, where he was stationed in St. Louis until 1959.  In 1972 he received his Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice from King’s College.

In 1965 Tino began service as a patrolman with the Wilkes-Barre Police Department, and in June of 1973 he was promoted to Detective.  While serving on the police force Tino investigated and prosecuted numerous homicides, robberies and assaults.  He received several certificates and commendations throughout his career.

After his retirement from the police force in 1997, Tino continued his public service with the Commonwealth’s Office of the Inspector General.  He served in this capacity for five years, and was then employed by King’s College as a desk attendant at Scanlon Gymnasium.

A sports lover, Tino was a frequent presence at local competitions.  His favorite sport was baseball, and he was a Red Sox fan from the time he discovered Ted Williams.  His prayers were answered in 2004 when the Sox finally vanquished the Yankees and won the World Series.

Tino was involved in community service in a social capacity as well, and was a member of the Parson’s Lion’s Club since 1990, Fraternal Order of Police Wyoming Valley Lodge #36, the Wilkes-Barre Police Retiree’s Association and was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Wilkes-Barre.

Tino is survived by his wife of forty-one years, the former Eleanor Peck; his three children Anthony Andreoli, Esq., Philadelphia, Valerie Andreoli, Kingston and Deanna Bond, Philadelphia; and his son-in-law Brian Bond, Philadelphia. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 10 am in St. Dominic’s Church, Wilkes-Barre.  Friends are invited to go directly to church.  Interment will be is St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Frances M. Serafin, 87 of Plains Township died Monday afternoon at Hospice Care of the VNA, Heritage House, Wilkes-Barre. 

Born in Plains, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Marie (Raymond) Serafin. 

She was a graduate of Plains Memorial High School and was employed for Freider Cigar Company and Carter Footwear. 

She was preceded in death by her brothers Michael, Sr., and Joseph Serafin; Sisters Jule Augustaitus and Marie Abromowicz. 

Surviving are her sister Anne Honeywell, Plains, Nieces and Nephews Michael Serafin, Karen Serafin Smith, Steve Serafin, Peggy Melheltz, Bill Melheltz, Judy Bonomo, Ann Pickle, Raymond Abromowicz, Norman Honeywell and Leo Augustaitus.

John “Dok” Doknovitch, of Plains, Twp., died Saturday morning at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born July 1, 1949 he was the son of the late Anthony and Helen (Gersahim) Doknovitch.

He was a graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre, class of 1967,
Luzerne County Community College, Nanticoke, and The Culinary Institute of America, New Haven CT.

“Dok” was employed in the food service industry for 38 years. He retired in July 2008 from The State Correctional Institution, Dallas, after serving as Food Service Manager for 28 years.

He was a member of the Parish Community of North Wilkes-Barre.

He was preceded in death by his brother Stanley.

Surviving are his loving wife Diane of 29 years; son Mark and his wife Cathy (Susek) Doknovitch, Lansdale; brother Anthony Doknovitch, New York, aunt and uncle, Wilkes-Barre, numerous loving cousins and friends who were there beside him during his courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday from 5 to 7 pm at the Corcoran Funeral Home, 20 South Main Street, Plains.

A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday at 11:00 am at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Wilkes-Barre. Friends are invited to go directly to Church Wednesday morning. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family.

Lottie (Olszewski) Sikora, “Aunt Lottie”, 91, of Laflin died Friday morning at Hospice Care of the VNA, Heritage House, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Mary (Gnutek) Olszewski.

Lottie attended G.A.R. High School, Wilkes-Barre and was employed for Leon/Ferenbach Silk Mill, Wilkes-Barre and Eberhard Faber, Mt. Top.

She was a member of St. Maria Goretti Church, Laflin.

She was preceded in death by her husband John C. Sikora on September 24, 1988, Sisters Helen Jaskiewicz and Florence Coleman, Brothers Stanley and Lawrence Olszewski.

Surviving are her niece and caregiver Janine Zaremski, Laflin, Sisters Josephine Yamilkoski, Shickshinny, Louise Zawatski and Irene Stook, Wilkes-Barre, numerous nieces and nephews.

Joseph Gustinucci, 87, of Wesley Village and formerly of Bear Creek died Friday morning at United Methodist Homes, Wesley Village Campus, Jenkins Township.

Born in Wilkes-Barre on May 25, 1922, he was the son of the late Eugene and Elizabeth (Passeri) Gustinucci.

Joe was a graduate of Plains Memorial High School, Class of 1940 and was employed as a Coal Miner for the Hudson Coal Company and as a Foreman for #1 Contracting Corporation, Pittston until his retirement.

He was a member of St. Maria Goretti Church, Laflin, The Perugia Beneficial Society, Keystone for 71 years and the Deerhorn Sportsman Club, New Milford, PA where he was one of the founding members.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary (Materazzi) Gustinucci on August 24, 2008.

Surviving are his sons Alan and his wife Michaeline and Eugene and his wife Ann, all of Plains; Grandchildren Alan and his wife Kimberly, Jason, Eugene and his wife Tahnee, Jeffrey and his wife Shannon and Janelle Ocampo and her husband James; Great Grandchildren Joshua, Troy, Chiara, Karlie and Gianna, Brother Ernest and his wife Gilda, Keystone, Sisters Vilma Fabbrini, Keystone and Jenny Georgetti and her husband Rudy, Plains, numerous nieces and nephews.

Gerald T. Keyes, of the Hilldale section of Plains, Twp., passed away unexpectedly Saturday afternoon at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains, Twp., surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late John and Beatrice (Hannon) Keyes.

Jerry was a graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, and was an Army Veteran. 

He was employed as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service for 34 years, until his retirement and was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. 
He was currently employed at Little Flower Manor Nursing Home, Wilkes-Barre.

He was preceded in death by his brother Robert Keyes, and sister Eleanor Andes.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years, the former Patricia O’Hara, Hilldale, son Kevin Keyes and his wife Donna, Wilkes-Barre, daughter Kimberly Krushnowski and her husband Stephen, Old Forge, grandsons Ryan and Brady Keyes, Casey, Cael, and Camren Krushnowski, sister Betty Lukasavage, Wilkes-Barre, brothers John Keyes Mountaintop, and Donald Keyes, Tarpon Springs, Florida, several nieces and nephews.

Myrna L. Hudack, 72 of Bear Creek Township, died Saturday afternoon at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in the Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late William J. and Minnie (Casterline) Shovlin.

She was a graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, class of 1955 and was employed at the Wilkes-Barre Vocational Technical School, Plains, in the Cafeteria until her retirement.

Myrna was a member of the Beaumont Free Methodist Church, Buck Township, and the Tuesday Morning Stonecroft Bible Study and was an avid golfer and fisherwoman.

She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph (Sid) Hudack on October 6, 2005, and her son David J. Hudack on November 3, 2009.

Surviving are her son Daniel Hudack and his wife Debbie, Wilkes-Barre, daughter-in-law Jean Hudack, Wilkes-Barre, grandchildren Daniel, David, Jarrod, Kristen and Brynn, great-grandchildren Brendan and Kaylin, sister Patsy Evans and her husband Rev. Robert Evans, Bear Creek Township, brother William Shovlin and his wife Marie, Hanover, several nieces and nephews.

Howard T. Andreoni, 91, of Plains Township, died Sunday morning at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in Old Forge, he was the son of the late Noah and Louise Taroli Andreoni, and was a graduate of Plains Memorial High School, class of 1935.
Howard was a World War II, Korean and Vietnam Army Air Force veteran serving 32 years and attained the rank of 1st lieutenant. He served with the 468th Bomb Group 793 Squadron.  He survived Two crash landings and received the Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnam Service Medal, Airmen Medal for Heroism; and was credited with 32 missions and 17 Hump Missions Flown in the China/Burma campaign.

After serving our country Howard worked for the United States Postal Service retiring in 1981.

He was a member of the Plains American Legion Joseph E. Conlon Post 558 and the Dupont Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 4909.

He is preceded in death by his Brothers Nello and Enzo Andreoni; Sisters Lillian Andreoni, Mary Dini and Linda Papi.

Surviving are Howard’s wife the former Thelma Carnevali Leandri, Plains, Daughters Colleen Daze and Husband John, Yardley, Pa.; Kathleen Lariviere and her husband Paul, Manchester, Maine; Grandson Jeffrey Lariviere and Wife Nancy, Westville, Mass,; Nephews and Nieces.

Military funeral will be held Wednesday at 9:00 am from the Corcoran Funeral Home, 20 South Main Street Plains, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am in SS. Peter & Paul Church Plains.  Interment will be held in the Italian Independent Cemetery, West Wyoming.

David J. Hudack, 49, of Wilkes-Barre, died Tuesday evening at Hospice Community Care, Geisinger South, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Buck Township, he was the son of the former Myrna Shovlin Hudack and the late Joseph (Sid) Hudack of Buck Township.

He was a graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, class of 1978 and was co-owner of Gutter King of Wilkes-Barre, and was a member of Beaumont Free Methodist Church, Buck Township.

David was very active in the St. Theresa/South Wilkes-Barre Baseball as Past President of the Little League from 2002 to 2005 and also served on the Board of Directors for 11 years. He was instrumental in organizing Inter League Baseball, and was an all star coach and a assistant coach for Little League. He also was an organizer of Tournament Leagues for South Wilkes-Barre Baseball and helped organized Fall League Baseball. He was a PIAA Baseball Umpire for 11 years.

David was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and a Die Hard Indianapolis Colts fan and was an avid Golfer, Fisherman, and Camper.

Surviving in addition to his Mother Myrna Hudack, are his Wife the former Jean Chopack, Wilkes-Barre; Daughter Brynn Hudack, at home; Sons David Hudack, Jr. and his wife Terra, Plains; Jarrod Hudack and his Fiancée Bianca Sauceda, Harding; Brother Daniel Hudack and his wife Debbie, Wilkes-Barre; Grandchildren Brendan and Kaylin Hudack; Nephews and Nieces and faithful companion Riley.

Anne P. McKeown, of Edwardsville, died Thursday evening in the inpatient unit of Hospice Community Care, Geisinger South, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late James and Mary (O’Brien) McKeown.

She was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School, Wilkes-Barre and College Misericordia, Dallas.  Anne was employed by the Hanover Area School District, and last for the Wilkes-Barre Area School District, teaching at Elmer L. Meyers High School, retiring in 1999.

She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre.

Surviving are her sister Marion Roski, Wilkes-Barre, Brothers James McKeown and his wife Peggy, Whites Boro, NY, Joseph Eugene McKeown, Audubon, PA, and Robert McKeown and his wife Rose, Wilkes-Barre, several nieces and nephews.

Leonard Joseph Bozzey, 80, husband of the late Joan (Corcoran) Bozzey, of Wilkes-Barre, PA, Endwell, NY, Waterford, CT and most recently, Lafayette, CO passed away October 1, 2009 surrounded by his two loving daughters and their husbands.

He was born June 28, 1929 to Walter and Viola (Brodginski) Bozzey in Ashley, PA.

He proudly served his country in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

Leonard made his home in Endwell, NY when he accepted a position with IBM in 1967. A year later he was united in marriage to the former Joan Ann Corcoran.

He was an avid golfer, enjoyed dining out, Manhattans and an occasional cigarette. He especially loved spending time with his family and friends. After retirement, he enjoyed volunteering for Meals on Wheels of Western Broome Country and serving as a marshal at the B.C. Open Golf Tournament for several years.

He was predeceased by his parents, his wife and two sisters Pauline Bozzey and Rita Kalczynski. He is survived by one sister, Gloria Becker, of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., his two daughters and sons-in-law, Leann and Bence Strickland of Norwich, CT and Ann Marie and Jerry Arvoy of Lafayette, CO and 4 adoring grandchildren; Robert and Jack Ramsdell, Sabrina Strickland, and Aiden Arvoy. He was looking forward to meeting his fifth grandchild in November.

A memorial service is planned for the spring. Expressions of sympathy in Leonard’s memory can be made to a hospice of your choice, as hospice provided the dignity and comfort he much deserved during his last year.

Marguerite A. Ciali, 90 of Pittston, passed away on Friday October 16, 2009, at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in Plains, Township, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Carolina (Siani) Florio. 

She attended Plains Memorial High School, and was employed as a seamstress by Dori Sportswear of Pittston, until her retirement.

She was a member of St. Rocco’s Church, Pittston.

She was preceded in death by her husband Orazio “George” Ciali, who passed away in 1998; brothers Anthony, Joseph, and James Florio; sisters Minnie, Mary, and Carolina Florio.

She is survived by her son Robert Ciali, Pittston, daughter Nancy Preby and her husband Ray, Pittston, granddaughter Laura Preby, Pittston, brothers John Florio, Plains, and Robert Florio, Broomall, PA, sister Rose Florio, Plains, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be held Tuesday at 8:45 am from the Corcoran Funeral, 20 South Main Street, Plains, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am in St. Rocco’s Church, Pittston.  Interment will be in the parish cemetery, Pittston Township.

Agnes Leskiw, 82 of Wilkes-Barre died Friday morning at her home.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late John and Josephine ( Sepetska) Koval. 

She was a graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, Class of 1945 and was employed as a Factory Worker in the Tire industry.  She was a member of Sacred Heart Slovak Church, Wilkes-Barre.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Stephen in 1994, brothers John and Frank Koval, sisters Cecila Terrace, Stella Krysa and Josephine Franchella. 

Surviving are her son Stephen Leskiw and his wife Mary, Plains, daughter Linda Evans and her husband Michael, Wilkes-Barre,  grandchildren Juliann DeFalco, Stephen, Allison and Matthew Leskiw, Ashley, Paige and Amber Evans, brother Joseph Koval, Wilkes-Barre, numerous nieces and nephews.

William (Coach) Silvi

William (Coach) Silvi, Sr., 67 of Plains Twp., died Saturday morning at his home.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Julian and Louise (Altavilla) Silvi.

He was a graduate of Plains Memorial High School, class of 1960, where he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball.  His high school career was topped off when he was selected as the outstanding athlete at Plains Memorial High School earning 9 Varsity Letters.  Bill received a football scholarship to the University of Richmond where he was a 3 year letterman and a 2 year starter at quarterback.  He later played professional football for the Scranton Miners (Taxi Squad for the New York Giants.)  His playing career was cut short when he enlisted in the military when he served in the 109th Field Artillery during the Vietnam War. 

After his playing days, he turned to coaching while working in the retail and banking fields.  His coaching career started with Plains Yankee Football, and then moving onto Dallas and James M. Coughlin High Schools, and was presently the Offensive Coordinator for G.A.R. High School, Wilkes-Barre.  Mr. Silvi was inducted into the Plains Sports Hall of Fame in October of 1996.

Bill was a member of the Perugia Beneficial Society, Keystone section of Plains, and the Italian American Citizens Club, Hudson section of Plains.  He loved spending time at Dominick’s Café in Hudson.

Surviving are his son William Silvi, Jr., and his wife Maria, Plains, Twp., daughter Gina Reed and her husband Joseph, Northumberland, grandchildren Chelsie and Casey Silvi, and Jacob Reed, sister Judy Evanosky, Plains, nephews Keith, Mark, and Matthew Evanosky.

Funeral will be held Tuesday at 9:00 am from the Corcoran Funeral Home, 20 South Main Street, Plains, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am in SS. Peter & Paul Church, Plains, with Father Michael Kloton, officiating.  Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover, Twp.

Dr. Guy V. Ferrell

Dr. Guy V. Ferrell, 89, Wilkes-Barre passed away on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 while a patient at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in Bertrand, Missouri, he was the son of P.P. and Ora Lee Miles Ferrell.

Dr. Ferrell earned a B.S. degree from Southeast Missouri State University and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Vanderbilt University in Education Administration and Educational Psychology.

Dr. Ferrell was a Public School Teacher in Morehouse, Missouri from 1939 to 1941.  A Veteran of World War II, Dr. Ferrell served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1943 until 1945, attaining the rank of Ensign.  From 1945 to 1946 he served as a High School Principal in Hayti, Missouri.  He taught Psychology at Murray State University, Murray, Kentucky from 1947 to 1948.  From 1948 through 1953 he was Assistant Professor of Education and Psychology at Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro, Tennessee.  He was Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the Detroit Institute of Technology from 1952 through1956.  At William Patterson State College, Dr. Ferrell was Director of Research from 1956 to 1957.  From 1957 to 1958 Dr. Ferrell was Assistant and Acting Superintendent of Schools, Tenafly Public Schools, Tenafly, New Jersey.  Dr. Ferrell served as the New Jersey State Director of Community and Two Year Colleges, establishing the state’s community college system in 1959

As the founding President of Luzerne County Community College he served in that capacity from 1967 through 1974 and is considered the driving force behind the college as an academic institution serving the needs of thousands of local students, past, present and future.

Dr. Ferrell retired from Northern Virginia Community College, Annandale, Virginia in 1985 having served as Provost and Chief Administrative Officer.

Preceding him in death was his beloved wife Phyllis of 62 years. 

Surviving are his son, Keith Ferrell, a prominent local psychologist and his wife, Marylee Brennan-Ferrell, of Wilkes-Barre.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, October 3, 2009 at St. Mary’s Cemetery  Mausoleum at 10:00 am. There will be no calling hours.

Elizabeth (Beth) Anne Stawasz of Plains Township went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday following a brave battle with Leukemia. 

She was born in Wilkes-Barre to Andrew and Ruth (Miller) Gobla on December 17, 1960 and was a graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, Class of 1978.  She was employed by Keystone Automotive, Exeter as a Buyer in the Purchasing Department. 

She was a  life member of East End Primitive Methodist Church, Wilkes-Barre.  She was a Sunday School Teacher and was the Coordinator of the Nursery for over 20 years. 

In addition to her parents, Beth is survived by her loving husband John (Jack) for 29 years, daughter Nicole and Son Craig, at home, sister Sharon Leslie and her husband Edward, Wilkes-Barre, several nieces and nephews. 

There will be no calling hours. 

A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Born in Hilldale, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Anna (Malachina) Drako.

Madeline, along with her sister and brothers, were owners of Andy’s Diner of Wilkes-Barre, where she also worked as a cook until her retirement.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Rosemary Romanoski; sister Verna Drako; brothers Andrew, John, Joseph, and Frank Drako.

Surviving are her grandsons Joseph and Kevin Romanoski; 2 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Alberta Churnside Amos, 97 of Ormond Beach, Florida, and formerly of the Hudson section of Plains, Twp., died Sunday morning at Bishop’s Glen Health Care Center, Holly Hill, Florida. 

Born in Plains, she was the daughter of the late William and Winifred (Durkin) Churnside.

She was a graduate of Plains Memorial High School, and was employed as a library aide for Cotton Avenue School, Hudson.

She was a member of St. Nicholas Church, Wilkes-Barre.

She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Amos, brother Philip Churnside, sisters Mary Churnside and Ann Corcoran.

Marie M. Gomelko, 91 of the North End section of Wilkes-Barre, died Friday morning at Riverstreet Manor Nursing Home, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary (Monko) Koreny.

She was a graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre and was employed for the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board in Field Accounting, for the Kirby Health Center, Wilkes-Barre, for the Luzerne County Sheriff’s Department, and for the Pennsylvania Department of Public Assistance as a secretary.

Marie was a member of the Parish Community of North Wilkes-Barre, Sacred Heart Slovak Church and their Altar and Rosary Society, and was also very active in the Church’s Annual Bazaar.  She was also Past President of the North End Senior Citizens Association and a member of the Plains Senior Citizens Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband Albert B. Gomelko on October 21, 1980.

Surviving are her son Albert G. Gomelko and his wife Carol, Bear Creek, grandsons Christopher Gomelko and his wife Dawn, and Scott Gomelko, great-grandchildren Emily, Madalyn and Matthew Gomelko, sisters Florence Kappers and her husband Herman, Exeter, and Irene Craig, Wilkes-Barre.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 9:30 am in Sacred Heart Slovak Church, Wilkes-Barre.  Interment will be held in the parish cemetery, Dallas.  Friends are invited to go directly to church.

Giovanina (Jennie) Deitrick, 93, of Wyoming, died Tuesday afternoon at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains.

Born in the Hilldale section of Plains Township, she was the daughter of the late Carlo and Rosa (Altobelli) Trovarelli.

Jennie was employed as a secretary for Alcoa Aluminum Company, Philadelphia, until her retirement in 1972.  She lived in Philadelphia and New Jersey a number of years before moving back to Wilkes-Barre in 1984.

She is preceded in death by her husband William (Red) Deitrick in 1984; brothers Dominick and Adolph Trovarelli and sisters Julia Mangione and Susan Hemingway.

Surviving are Theresa Bellumori who she cared for and lived for most of her life, nieces Dolores D’Alessandro and her husband Joseph, Wyoming, Theresa Mikelski and her husband Bill, Hilldale, numerous grand nieces and nephews.

Regina (Jean) Kelly, 84 of Laflin passed away at the inpatient unit of Hospice Community Care, Geisinger South, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Larksville, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Heffernan) McHugh.

She was a graduate of Larksville High School and was employed for College Misericordia Alumni Office of Dallas and for St. Maria Goretti Church, Laflin from 1975 until her retirement in 1989.

She was a member of St. Maria Goretti Church, St. Ignatius Bowling League and St. Ignatius Catholic Daughters of Kingston.  Jean also volunteered at Cathryn McAuley House of Plymouth and St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen of Wilkes-Barre.

She was preceded in death by her husband William F. Kelly Jr. on Jan. 29, 2005, sisters Rita Allman and Ann Bucikowski, brothers John and Edward McHugh.

Surviving are her daughters Colleen Benson and her husband Thomas, Kingston, and Jeanne Novis and her husband Michael, Montclair, VA, grandchildren Kelly Benson Klecha, Katie Benson, Joseph Drugan III, Kaelie Drugan, Gregory Novis, Matthew Novis, sisters Margaret Sarf, Laflin, and Patricia Keller, Vienna, VA, several nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

Samuel M. Nardone, Jr., 42 of the Old Boston Section of Jenkins Twp., died Wednesday afternoon at his home.

Born in Old Boston, he was the son of Samuel (Mike) Nardone of Old Boston, and the late Mary (Kurilla) Nardone.

Sam was a graduate of Seton Catholic High School, Pittston, Class of 1984, and attended Luzerne County Community College for 2 years.  He was previously employed as a Police Officer for several townships and more recently in food service management for several fast food chains. 

He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Pittston, and the Roma Club of Old Boston.  Sam was an avid Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Pittsburg Penguin Fan, and Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Yankees Fan.

Surviving in addition to his father, are his sister JoAnn Bogdanovicz, Moosic Lake, brother Francis Nardone and his wife Diane, Sailorsville; nieces Stephanie, Christina, Nicole, and Mary, nephew Matthew, numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

John Domnick Mahon

John Domnick “Master Chief” Mahon, 66 of West Wyoming, formerly of Hanover, passed away peacefully at his home on August 25, 2009. 

Born on February 6, 1943 in Chelsea, MA; he was the son of the late John Bartholomew and Jean Marie (Haley) Mahon.  John attended St. Aloysius School as a child and graduated from Hanover Township High School, Class of 1960.

His active career with the United States Navy began in September of 1960 until his reassignment in December of 1990 to the US Naval Reserves with full retirement in 1993.  The duties to his country were in the submarine division as a Precision Opticalman.  After achieving the rank of E-9, Master Chief Petty Officer, he was assigned the duties of Command Master Chief. 

In 1989, John started his own company and became president of Northeast Precision Optics (NPO), which operated to serve the broadcast television industry. 

John is survived by Rae Anusiewicz of West Wyoming, companion of 15 years; daughter Melissa Mahon of Mountaintop, and grandchild Ayla; son Bartholomew John Mahon of Wilkes-Barre and grandchild Zoe Genia; sister Marcella Mahon of TX; sister Margo McGonagle of Il; sister Mary Jean Grove of Fl; brother Bartholomew Mahon of NJ; sister Barbara Beynon of PA; and several nieces and nephews. 

In accordance to his wishes PCCM John D. Mahon received a military tribute and burial at sea.  Contributions in his memory can be made to the Luzerne County SPCA,

Bertha A. Baganski, 86 of the Hudson section of Plains, Twp., died Friday morning at United Methodist Homes, Wesley Village Campus, Jenkins, Twp, under the care of Hospice Community Care.

Mrs. Baganski had been a resident of Anderson Personal Care Unit for the past year.

Born in Hudson, she was the daughter of the late Enrico and Sabatina (Lombardo) Catani.

She attended Plains Memorial High School, and was employed as a Floor Lady for Heavenly Shoes of Hanover Twp.

Bertha was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Church, Hudson, and a member of the Auxiliary of the Hudson Service Men’s Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph P. Baganski on December 10, 2005, grandson Joseph Salus, sisters Mary Cappellini and Annie Sorbelli, brothers Leo, Paul, Angelo, Peter and John Catani.

Surviving are her daughter Barbara Salus and her husband Joseph, Hudson, son Joseph Baganski, Warminster, PA, grandchildren Theresa, Jason, Joseph, Michael, and Lisa, 9 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Thomas J. Cook, beloved son and brother, 38 of Wilkes-Barre, died Thursday morning at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in the Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of Nancy (Savage) Kioske and Kenneth Kioske of Miners Mills.

Tom was a graduate of the Centennial Class of James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre, Class of 1990, and was owner and operator of a club in Scranton.

Tom was loved and admired by his many friends, and his smile and humor were contagious.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his sister Kimberly Tran and her husband Quoc, Kingston, brother Joseph Kioske, Wilkes-Barre, his niece and the “Apple of his Eye” Kira Tran, companion Russ Bagnall, Wilkes-Barre, aunts, uncles and cousins, and his dogs, Blondie, Bella, Bo, and Blake.

Mary Cunningham Hassard, 87, of Miners Mills died Wednesday, Aug.12, 2009, at her home.

She was born Aug. 8, 1922 in Plains, the daughter of the late Andrew and Anna Garvin Cunningham and was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School, Plains.

She was a devoted wife to her husband Howard and loving mother to their three children, Mary Jane, Nancy and John. Mary resided in New Jersey for 60 years prior to returning to the area four years ago.

Mary was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Wilkes-Barre and its Altar and Rosary Society and the John Heinz Institute Auxiliary.
In addition to her husband of 62 years, Mary was preceded in death by her siblings, Mildred McGraw, John Cunningham, Anna Martin, Nellie McDermott and Edward Cunningham.

Surviving are her children, Mary Jane Nolan and husband John, New York, N.Y.; Nancy Burke and husband Edward, Kingston; John Hassard, Boston, Mass.
Mary is also survived by her devoted sister Kathleen McDermott, Miners Mills; grandchildren, Edward Burke, Edwardsville; Erin O'Donnell and husband Dennis, Baltimore, Md.; Nancy Bombulie and husband Jonathan, Mountain Top; Alec Nolan, New York, N.Y.; Nicholas Nolan, New York, N.Y.; Sara Hassard, Montpelier, Vt.; Emily Hassard, Montpelier, Vt.; many nieces and nephews.

Ralph (Buddy) Gambini, Sr. of Plains, Twp., died Friday evening at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains.

Born in the Hilldale section of Plains Twp., he was the son of the late Russell M. and Anna (Vissotski) Gambini.

He was a graduate of Plains Memorial High School, and was an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving with the 109th Field Artillery.

Ralph owned and operated a number of beauty salons in the valley and was co-owner of 5 Star Pizza of Plains in the late 60’s and 70’s; he owned and operated a number of garment factories in Wilkes-Barre and the West Side form 1973 to 1995.

Active in local politics, he served as the 3rd District Republican Chairman; was a member and Past President of the Plains Rotary Club; a member of the Plains Businessmen Association; a member and served on the Board of Directors of the Northeast Apparel Association, he was a former member of the Fox Hill Country Club and a member of the Italian American Citizens Association. Ralph was a member of The Parish Community of Plains Township.

Ralph was married for 52 years to the former Mary G. Giordano, formerly of Pittston, whom he loved dearly. In addition to his Father and Mother he is preceded in death by his Brother Russell in 2000.

Surviving in addition to his Wife Mary are his Sons ; Ralph and Wife Debbie, Pittston; David and James, Plains; Daughter, Rochelle Aruscavage and her Husband Joseph, Laflin; Grandchildren, Daniel Gambini; Shelby and Sienna Aruscavage; Sisters, Shirley Antosh, and her Husband Peter, Plains; Patricia Chiampi and her Husband John, West Pittston and Barbara McDermitt and her Husband Terry, North Carolina; Nieces and Nephews.

Funeral will be held Tuesday at 9:00 am from the Corcoran Funeral Home 20 South Main Street Plains, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am in SS. Peter & Paul Church, Plains. Interment will be in the Italian Independent Cemetery, West Wyoming.

Friends may call Monday evening 5 to 8 pm.

Dolores Bucari Pierotti

Dolores Bucari Pierotti, 76 of Laflin passed away on Tuesday at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville after a brief illness.

Born in Old Forge on October 10, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Armando and Fidalma Crivelli Bucari. She was a graduate of Old Forge High School, Class of 1950 where she served as class valedictorian.  She was a graduate of the Scranton State General Hospital School of Nursing; the Robert Packer School of Anesthesia, Sayre, PA; a graduate of the first class of the School of Aviation Medicine, Brooks Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas where the former President Lyndon B. Johnson spoke at commencement exercises.  She was commissioned a Captain in the United States Air Force Nurse Corp. as a Nurse Anesthetist at James Connelly Air Force Base, Waco, Texas and attended Baylor University, Waco, Texas after an honorable discharge.  She returned to the Scranton area and practiced anesthesia at the Scranton State General Hospital and other area hospitals.  Upon the birth of her children she became a stay at home Mom to raise her family.  She was later employed at the Geno Merli Veterans Center in Scranton as well as the VNA Hospice in Wilkes-Barre.  She was also a highly respected private duty nurse.  She was a member of Saint Maria Goretti Church, Laflin.

She was a devoted wife and mother, a meticulous housekeeper, an avid gardener and possessed a beautiful operatic voice.  She will be sadly missed by family and friends. 

Surviving are her husband of forty-eight years, Aldino, Jr., a prominent restaurateur and owner/operator of Aldino’s Manor in Wilkes-Barre; a daughter A. Lisa Pierotti, Esquire, Plains; a son, Aldino, III, M.D., Pittsburgh and daughter -in-law Carolyn; granddaughters Catherine and Isabella and a grandson Lucien; a  sister Sylvia Doyle, Plains; sister-in-law Theresa Stacknick and her husband John, Dunedin, Florida; brother –in-law Richard Pierotti, M.D. and his wife Virginia, Harleysville, Pa; several nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Sylvio Bucari, Baltimore, Maryland. 

A mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Maria Goretti Church, Laflin at the convenience of the family.

Jeffrey Duane Strouse

Jeffrey Duane Strouse, 41 of Plains Twp., died Monday evening at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital after suffering a heart attack.

Born in Bellfonte, PA, he was the son of Rickey and Esther (Keith) Strouse of Weatherly.

He was a graduate of Weatherly Area High School, class of 1986, and was employed as a corrections officer for Luzerne County for the past 15 years.

Jeff was an assistant coach for the Plains Yankees Football Association and Plains Little League.  He was also involved with the wrestling program at the YMCA.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife the former Rachel (Renee) Allen, daughters Tara and Darlene, and son Patrick, all at home; brother Jason and his wife Genene, Weatherly, PA, nephew Victor and nieces DeAnna and Linsey.

Funeral Services will be held Friday at 10:00am from the Corcoran Funeral Home, with Rev. Dr. Paul Amara, Pastor of the Plains United Methodist Church, officiating.  Interment will be in SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Plains.

Friends may call Thursday evening from 5 to 8 pm.

Akacia L. Klick, 21 of Kingston, passed away Tuesday afternoon at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains, Twp., from Acute Intermittent Porphyria.

Born in Plains, she was the daughter of James Klick and Janet (Chopka) Klick of Kingston.

She was a graduate of Wyoming Valley West High School, Class of 2006, and Pennsylvania College of Technology, Williamsport, with a degree in Baking and Pastry Arts.  Akacia was enrolled and would have attended the Pennsylvania State University, Wilkes-Barre Campus in the fall.

She was a member of St. Ignatius Church, Kingston.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents John and Jean Klick and her uncle Ray Klick.

Surviving in addition to her parents Jim and Janet are her sister Sara Klick, Kingston, maternal grandparents Andrew and Jeanna Chopka, Plains, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Akacia was a beautiful person, inside and out, whose bright personality touched many hearts and left an impression on her many friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 9:30 am in St. Ignatius Church, Kingston.  Family and friends are invited to go directly to Church Friday morning.  Interment will be held at the convenience of the family in the Italian Independent Cemetery, West Wyoming.

James Patrick (Jimmy) Reinard, 62 of the Keystone section of Plains, Twp., passed away on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains, Twp.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late James and Renee (Moore) Reinard.

He was a graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre, Class of 1963, and was employed for Popple Construction, retiring in February 2009.

Jimmy was a member of the Perugia Beneficial Society, Keystone, the Italian Club and the Hudson Serviceman’s Club, both of the Hudson section of Plains, Twp.

He was preceded in death by his brother Patrick James Reinard.

Surviving are his wife the former Linda Stella, Keystone, sons Jamie Reinard and his wife Chrissy, Nottingham, PA, and Jody Reinard, and his wife Alissa, Laflin, and daughter Karrie Lynn and her husband Kyle, Reading, PA, grandchildren Alexis Stella Reinard, Gabriel Demitri Reinard, and Brooke Evans, sisters Joyce Munson and Renee Zupko, mother-in-law Emily Stella, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

Kipp J. Sebo, 60, of Kingston, passed away Tuesday at his home.Born in Manhattan, New York, he was the son of the late Carl and Anne Lilenfeld Sebo.Kipp was a graduate of Abington Heights High School, Syracuse University, and received his Masters Degree in Science and Administration of Justice and Security from the University of Phoenix.

He was a Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War, and was previous owner of Scotch and Sirloin Restaurant, Dunmore. He was employed for Luzerne County as a work release counselor and currently as a Teacher for Allied Technical School of Forty Fort teaching Criminal Justice.  He was a member of Christ Community Church, Kingston.He was preceded in death by his Wife the former Marion Burke.

Surviving are his Daughter, Anne Sebo, Shavertown; Son Dustin Sebo, Kingston; Brothers; Paul Sebo, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Eric Sebo, Plano, Texas; Nieces; Stephanie Sebo, Wilmington, North Carolina; Alanna Bartoli of Pittston; Nephews Mark Sebo, Plano Texas and Jeffrey Sebo Brooklyn, New York.

Sophie V. Surowitz, 95 of Wyoming, died Tuesday evening at Hospice Care of the VNA, Heritage House, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Warrior Run, she was the daughter of the late Daniel & Alexandria (Staniszewski) Surowitz. 

Sophie worked as a Nanny and Housekeeper in Brooklyn, NY for 40 years and was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Wilkes-Barre. 

She was preceded in death by her Sisters Alice I. Gola, Ann Rutkowski and Eleanor Falkinburg, Brothers Victor & Paul Surowitz and Niece Theresa Szykman. 

Surviving are her Niece Eleanor Prushko with whom she resided, Nephew Thomas Gola, Wilkes-Barre, Great Nieces and Nephews, Great-Great Nieces and Nephews and a Great-Great-Great Nephew. 

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the Hospice units for their wonderful care and support of Sophie.

Helen P. Kempka, 94 of Plains Township, entered God’s Arms Tuesday afternoon at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in the Parsons section of Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Anna (Majaczik) Wujcik.

Helen attended Wilkes-Barre area schools and was a Presser in the area Dress Factories until her retirement. She was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Church, Plains.

She is preceded in death by her husband Stephen on March 19, 1997; son Theodore, brothers John and Peter, sisters Julia, Josie, Mary, Lucy, & Francine.

Surviving are her daughters Dorothy Mazzola, Tampa Florida, Wanda Zendzion, with whom she resided, Plains, son Charles, Port St. Lucie, Florida 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, Sister Anna, and Helen’s dog Indian.

Born in Plains, she was the daughter of the late George and Agnes (Kelley) Turner. 

She was a graduate of Plains Memorial High School and was employed as a Waitress for Pizza Casa, Wilkes-Barre for many years. 

She was preceded in death by her brothers Bob and George Turner, Sisters Betty Witte, Audrey Bowden and Jean Mills. 

Surviving are her sons John and his wife Margaret, Dallas, Mark and his wife Connie, Nanticoke, Bruce and his wife Clare, Exeter and daughter Debbie Antonini, Plains, Grandchildren Johnny, Kerri, Christopher, Michelle, Mark, Rebecca and Jennifer; Great Grandchildren Ronnie, Alisa, Zachary, Emilee, Jake, Carson, Lauren and Breanna; Brother-in-law Bill Bowden, Sister-in-law Josephine Turner Smith, several nieces and nephews.

Born in Wilkes-Barre he is the son of John Boyle Sr. of the East End section of Wilkes-Barre and the late Doris Thompson Boyle.

John was a graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, class of 1976 and worked as a welder for Penn State Mechanical Construction of Plains. He was a member of St. Francis Church Miners Mills, the Triangle Club of Miners Mills and a former member of the Luzerne County Sheriff’s Rescue and Dive Team.

Surviving in addition to his father are his wife Donna Margalis Boyle, Miners Mills; son Shawn, Wilkes-Barre; daughter; Nicole, Plains; sister Maura and husband Danny Schiel; Plains, brothers Jeffrey and wife Carol; Buffalo, N.Y.; and Scott and wife Erin, Kailua Kona, Hawaii; nephews and nieces; Best Pals; Chopsy and Toonces.

Born in Harvey’s Lake, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Dorothy (Mooney) Derr.

She was a graduate of Lake Lehman High School, and was a member of Gate of Heaven Church, Dallas.

Born in Key West, Florida, she was the daughter of Dale & Zeline (Harris) Bennett of Edneyville, NC. 

She was a graduate of Edneyville High School, Edneyville, North Carolina, and was a homemaker all of her life.

Surviving are her husband John J. Moskel, Plains, son Jason and daughter Julia, both at home, siblings Tina, Elaine, Jenny, Winny, Mary, Becky, Brenda, Virginia, Catherine and Tim.

William J. (Duke) Coffay, Jr.

William J. (Duke) Coffay, Jr., 54 of the Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre, passed away suddenly Sunday afternoon while working in Hackensack, New Jersey.

Born in Trenton, New Jersey, he was the son of Shirley L. (Jacoby) Coffay, and the late William J. Coffay, Sr.

He was a graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, Class of 1973, and was owner and operator of Bear Creek Restoration for many years and last employed as a foreman for Shawnee Restoration of Plains.

Bill was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Bishop William J. Haffey, Council 302, Wilkes-Barre, a member of the Black Sheep Squadron Remote Flying Club, and a Life Member of the North American Fishing Club.

Surviving in addition to his mother Shirley Coffay, are his wife the former Barbara Cups, Wilkes-Barre, daughters Marissa Zielinski, and Danielle Coffay, both of Wilkes-Barre, granddaughter Brennah Zielinski, brother Timothy Coffay, Pittston, sisters Debra Goodrich, Tunkhannock, Patricia Unvarsky, Wilkes-Barre, and Carolyn Walsh, Pittston, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.  There will be no calling hours.

Mary A. Monaghan

Mary A. Monaghan, a resident of Dan Flood Towers in Kingston, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2009, surrounded by her loving children and grandchildren.

Born in Plains, PA, August 26, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Julia Burns Tinsley and Irvin C. Tinsley.  Mary was also reared by her grandparents, John and Helen Burns, and thus she and her brother considered their aunts and uncles to be brothers and sisters.

She attended Plains public schools and was a graduate of Plains Memorial High School, class of 1947.  She was also a graduate of Wilkes-Barre Business College. Prior to her marriage, she worked as a receptionist for International Color Press, Wilkes-Barre. Later in life, she worked for many years at Leslie Fay.

Everyone who knew her thought Mary had the biggest and softest heart - one filled with nothing but love, and one she generously shared with her large family.

Her husband was the late William J. Monaghan who passed away in 1995.  Together they spent 43 wonderful years together, spending most of their married lives living in Wilkes-Barre and Plains.  Mary and Bill were living proof that opposites attract.  Bill was an out-going person while Mary was quiet and soft spoken.  As different as they were, they made quite a team, and it was easy to see how much they loved each other, which made for a very happy home. 

She was a member of St. Ignatius Church, Kingston.

Mary was also preceded in death by siblings, Florence Doran, Mary Carrigg, June Callahan;  Joseph, John, Albert and Helen Burns and son-in-law, John Gouse.

Mary is survived by eight children, 22 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren who loved and cherished her.  Children: Mrs. Michael Milz (Patty), Wilkes-Barre; Mrs. James Beddall (Peggy), Selinsgrove; Mrs. Dwight Davis (Molly), Dallas; William C. Monaghan and his wife, Chris, Plains; Michael Monaghan and his wife, Betsy, Forty Fort; Mrs. John Gouse (Sharon), Kingston Twp.; Mrs. George Firmstone (Katie), Honesdale; and Mrs. Timothy Gorman (Julie), Bethel, CT.  Grandchildren, Atty. Andrew, Atty. Martin, and Christian Milz; Ryan, Erin, Joshua and Kelly Beddall, Lauren and Meghan Davis; Joseph, Alyssa and Matthew Monaghan; Brynn and Morgan Monaghan; Kendra and Sarah Gouse; Abby, Emma, Julia and Jack Firmstone, Sean and Bridget Gorman.  Great-grandchildren, Samuel, Anna, Nicholas and Michael Milz; Morgan Adams; Alison and Jacob Beddall.  Brother, Joseph Tinsley and wife Suzanne, Danville, and sister, Dorothy Murray, Plains, PA.  Numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.

Allan E. Makowski

Allan E. Makowski, 57, of Kingston died June 8th in Gallup, New Mexico while on vacation with his family. 

Born in Kingston, he was the son of Dolores (Arcovitch) Makowski and the late Edward Makowski.

He was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Kingston, Class of 1969 and King’s College.  He was previously employed for Mutual of New York, Blue Cross of Northeastern PA and last as an Account Representative for Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield in the Davis Vision Division.  He was a former President of Life Underwriters Association and held the Fellow designation of the Life Underwriters Training Council.  He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Assumpta Council 3987, Luzerne and was an Eagle Scout and belonged to the Northeastern Pennsylvania Council of the Boy Scouts of America.  He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Church, Plains. 

Allan was a modern day Renaissance man whose talents included writing poetry, painting, photography and playing the trumpet.  He was also an avid hunter and fisherman and he enjoyed Native American Archeology. 

Surviving are his wife the former Pauline Kmetz, son Allan Jr., Wilkes-Barre, daughter Stephanie, at home and sister Marsia Makowski, Larksville. 

A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, June 27th at 12:00 pm at SS. Peter & Paul Church, 13 Hudson Road Plains,.  Family will receive friends from 11:00 am until the time of service.  Interment will be held at the convenience of the family.  A Celebration of Life will follow the service.  Family and friends are invited to come and share stories and memories of Allan.

Anne Marie Kudcey of Endwell, New York, passed from this life to the next on June 10, 2009 in Leesburg, Virginia, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Plains, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary (Lewon) Skierski.  She later moved to Binghamton, New York and was employed at Singer-Link for 40 years. 

Anne was a loving and devoted Mother to her only daughter.  She will always be remembered for her beautiful smile, grace and elegance.  She was considered a “fashion plate” by those who knew her and she modeled in her youth for “Drazen’s City of Fashion”.  Her delicious city chicken and kolatchi were staples at family gatherings and we’ll always remember her beautiful Christmas Tree during the holidays. 

“Your beauty will be missed in every way.  Forever in our hearts.”

She was preceded in death by her brother-in-law Ray Mikula.

Anne is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Roxanne and Robert Barden, Leesburg, VA, Grandchildren Christopher and Kimberly Barden, Sisters, Stephanie Mikula and Florence Yencho both of Plains, Brothers Frank Skierski and his wife Helen, Endicott, NY and Stanley Skierski and his wife Marge, Plains, Goddaughter Denise (Yencho) Pipkin, McLean, VA, Nieces, Nephews and beloved grand puppies, Missy and Rocco.

Janice M. Brody, 73, of Edwardsville died Saturday afternoon at the inpatient unit of Hospice Community Care, Geisinger South, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in the Irishtown section of Plains Township, she was the daughter of the late John and Ethel (Price) Miller. She was a graduate of Plains Memorial High School and was employed as a Supervisor for Bell-Atlantic Telephone until her retirement.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Wilkes-Barre, Past President of Verizon Telecom Pioneers, Wilkes-Barre, Past President of the Knights of Columbus Ladies of Assumpta Council 3987, Luzerne and Past member of the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Kingston.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years John Brody on Nov. 29, 2006.

Surviving are her daughter Mary Neely and her husband Donald, Plymouth, Sons John and his wife Ruth, Mountaintop, James and his wife Camile, Hanover, David and his wife Cathy, Edwardsville, Grandchildren Ashley Demchak and her husband Danny, Valerie, Bethany, Joshua, Megan and Rebekah Brody and Alyson Neely, Sister Jackie Stoker, Plains, Nieces and Nephews.

John J. Doran

John J. Doran, 89, of Plains Township, passed away Friday evening at his home with his loving family at his side.

Born in Wilkes-Barre on September 9, 1919, he was the son of the late Henry and Kathryn (Brannigan) Doran. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School, Plains, Class of 1938. In 1941, he joined the US Army, 152 Armored Signal Company and served in England, France, Germany and Belgium.

He was employed as a Tool & Dye Maker for 25 years for Diamond Manufacturing, retiring in 1985.

He was the last founding member of Father’s Club 100 which was established in 1958 as a home for the Boy Scouts and Explorer Scouts for Plains.

He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus (4th Degree Alhambra); Notre Dame Society, Sacred Heart Holy Name Society and the Plains American Legion Joseph E. Conlon Post 558.

He was preceded in death by his wife the former Florence Burns on March 4, 2008 and his brother Eugene.

Surviving are his daughter Kathryn Giovagnoli, Laflin, Sons John and his wife Bernice, Darnestown, Maryland, Robert, Plains and Henry and his wife Rita, Duryea, 9 Grandchildren and 18 Great Grandchildren.

Miliatary Funeral will be held on Monday at 9 am from the Corcoran Funeral Home, 20 South Main Street, Plains with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am at Sacred Heart Church, Plains. Joseph F. Karaffa, Jr., 61 of Floral City, FLA and formerly of Plains Twp., died Monday at his home. 

Born in Plains, he was the son of the late Joseph and Genevieve (Stachurski) Karaffa. 

Joseph was a graduate of Plains Memorial High School class of 1965 and Wilkes-Barre Business College.  He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, and was a member of the Army Reserves  109 Watres Armory, Scranton,  for 20 years. He was employed as an Electronics Worker at Tobyhanna Army Depot until his retirement. 

He was a member of the Polish American Vets, Plains American Legion Joseph E. Conlon Post 558 and the Hudson Servicemen’s Club, all of Plains, Twp.   He was inducted into the Plains Sports Hall of Fame in 2008 for his achievements in Baseball. 

He is survived by his son and Daughter In Law Joseph III, & Shannon Karaffa, Florida; Grandchildren Carly and Caitlyn Karaffa, all of Citrus Springs, FLA, Sister Bernadine Burnett,  Plains, nephew Joseph Burnett.   

Military Services will be held Saturday at 9 am from the Corcoran Funeral Home, 20 South Main Street, Plains, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am in SS. Peter & Paul Church, Plains.  Interment will be in the parish cemetery, Plains.

Born in Pittston, he was the son of Dolores Mc Donnell Answini, of Wilkes-Barre, and the late Emilio (Butch) Answini.

He was a graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, Class of 1976 and was formerly employed for Addy Asphalt of Keystone and last for All State Traffic Control of Kingston.

He was a member of the Triangle Club of Miners Mills and loved to fish and hunt.
Surviving are his mother Dolores, Wilkes-Barre; sons; Robert Jr., and Justin, both of Wilkes-Barre, former wife Theresa Boris, Wilkes-Barre; companion Theresa DeEsso, with whom he resided; aunts and uncles and nephews.

Michael “Turk” Merolla, 54 of the Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre, died Monday afternoon at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Plains, Twp.

Born in the Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Thomas J. “Turk” and Anne Marie (Finn) Merolla, Sr.

He was a graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, class of 1972, an Army Veteran and was employed as a carpenter in the construction field.

He was a member of the Triangle Club, Miners Mills, Marine Corp. League, Miners Mills, The Polish American Veteran Association, Plains, and the Hudson Servicemen’s Club, Hudson. 

Surviving are his sister Nancy Niemenski, Exeter, brothers Thomas Merolla, Jr. and his wife Janet, Wilkes-Barre, Christopher Merolla, Orange, Conn, and Patrick Merolla, Wilkes-Barre.

Rosemarie (Bednar) Evans, 66 of Wyoming passed away on Wednesday morning at Geisinger Wyoming Valley, Plains.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Gutchmonowski) Bednar. 

She was a graduate of Swoyersville High School and was employed at Blue Cross Blue Shield for 38 years. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son Michael Bednar and Brother, Robert Bednar. 

Surviving are her husband Michael Evans, Wyoming, Granddaughter Peyton Bednar, Tunkhannock, Step-daughter Jennifer Evans, West Pittston and Nieces Melissa Bednar, Forty Fort and Melanie Bednar Westawski, Sarasota, Fl. 

The family would like to thank Anita McGowan, the chaplain at Geisinger Wyoming Valley for her kindness and compassion during Rose’s time of need.  A special thank you from Mike to his Angels here on Earth.

She was preceded in death by her husband Eugene R. Roebuck, Sr. on December 28, 1984 and her brother Robert Rovinski.

Tina was a member of St. Maria Goretti Church, Laflin and the I.L.G.W.U.  Tina’s passions were cooking and the Apple of her Eye, her granddaughter Angelina.

She was preceded in death by her husband Fernando (Fia) Stella on August 14, 2005; brothers Frank, Levio, and Paul Pendolphi, sisters Anna Sipple, Valia Pendolphi, Nancy Rutkowski, and Daisy Charney.

Surviving are her son Anthony Stella and his wife Denise, Yatesville, granddaughter Angelina Stella; brother Ray Pendolphi and his wife Joanne, Laflin, sisters Olga (Penny) Lotzi, and her husband Frank, Keystone, Jeanette Gich, Keystone, and Lena Pasterelli, Hudson section of Plains, Twp., several nieces and nephews.

He was employed in the garment industry as a foreman and spreader and was a member of the International Garment Workers Union. He was a member of St. Mary’s Help of Christians Church, Pittston.

Peter cherished his granddaughter Gabrielle who was the light of his life.

He was preceded in death by his first wife the former Joan Palo, his second wife the former Rosemarie Sentigar, sisters Victoria Chimock and Jennie Hudock, brothers Joseph and James Serratore.

Surviving are his son Peter Serratore and his wife Pam, Wyoming, daughter Barbara Richards and her husband James, Connecticut, grandchildren Gabrielle Serratore, Shannon Richards, and Joshua Richards, sisters Laura Nasser and Catherine Contorsi, both of Wilkes-Barre, and Elizabeth Tonte, Pittston, several nieces and nephews.

Barbara Ann (Slade) Mrozinski, 47 of Acworth, Georgia, and formerly of Plains, Twp., died unexpectedly on Good Friday, April 10, 2009, at her home.

Born March 18, 1962, in Plains, PA, “Barbie” was the beloved daughter of Edward and Helen (Kantorek) Slade of Plains.

Barbara Ann Graduated from North End Catholic Elementary School, and was a 1980 graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, and a Majorette with the Marching Band.  She attended Luzerne County Community College, Nanticoke.

She was employed by Jr. Colony of Wilkes-Barre in sales and modeling, for Golden Business Machine of Kingston as an instructor, and last for Marketing Systems Accounting of Marietta, Georgia.

Barbie was a member of St. Catherine’s Church, Kennesaw, GA, where she taught CCD.

Surviving in addition to her parents are her daughter and son Marie and Matthew Mrozinski, at home, Sister Bonnie Bidwell and her husband Michael, Pittston, nieces and nephews Kimberly, Kristen, and Kevin Bidwell, great-niece and great-nephew Chloe Grace Bidwell and Aiden O’Haire, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

William H. “Bill” Cross, 91 of Jenkins Township, and formerly of Prompton, PA, died Monday afternoon at United Methodist Homes, Wesley Village Campus, Jenkins Twp., after a brief illness.

Born in Quebec, Canada, he was the son of the late William J. and Flora (Buck) Cross.

He was an Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant and serving with the 8th Army Air Corps.  He served as lead navigator and bombardier of 35 Missions in B-24’s for which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

He attended Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey, and was employed by Prudential Insurance as an Account Executive.

He was a member of St. Maria Goretti Church, Laflin, The Elkview Country Club, Crystal Lake, and the American Contract Bridge League.

Bill was active in sports.  He was 5 time National Table Tennis Champion, he bowled a 300 Game and recorded a hole-in-one in golf.

He was preceded in death by his brother-in-laws Michael and Joseph Fedorsak.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years the former Eleanor Fedorsak, formerly of Scranton; nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 10:00 am in St. Maria Goretti Church, Laflin.  Interment will be in Abington Hills Cemetery, Scranton.  Friends may call Saturday morning from 9:00 am to 10:00 at St. Maria Goretti Church.

She immigrated to Wilkes-Barre in 1955 and worked for Hess and Goldsmith of Wilkes-Barre, and last in the area dress factories.  She was a member of the Catholic Community of North Wilkes-Barre, St. John the Evangelist Church and its Altar and Rosary Society and the Auxiliary of Little Flower.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers Patrick, John, Michael and Anthony Munley, sister Mary Kelly.

Surviving are her brothers Thomas Munley, Wilkes-Barre, and James Munley, Limerick, Ireland, several nieces and nephews.

Born in Nanticoke on December 14, 1929, he was the son of Celia (Orlowski) Augustine and the late Stanley Augustine.

He was a graduate of Nanticoke High School, Bloomsburg State Teacher’s College, University of Scranton, and S.U.N.Y at Buffalo. 

He was an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict  serving as a Medic.

He was employed as a Mathematics teacher at Northwest High School, Dallas High School, and Penn State University, Wilkes-Barre Campus.

He was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Church, Plains.

He was preceded in death by his brother Bernard.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife the former Rita Hudak, daughters: Kathy  Grinaway,  Nancy Augustine, Amy Augustine, Grandchildren Patrick and Rebecca Grinaway, sister Marie Mera, several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 10:00 in SS. Peter & Paul Church, Plains.   

Interment will be held at the convenience of the family.

Esther A. (Spangenburg) Marlino, 90, passed away peacefully Monday morning at Little Flower Manor Nursing Home, Wilkes-Barre, where she has resided for the past 5 years.

Born in Kingston, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Theresa (Dress) McCaffrey.

Esther was a graduate of Kingston High School, and College Misericordia, Dallas, with a Bachelors Degree in English and a minor in Education.

She was formerly employed for the Social Security Administration and worked with her late husband Anthony Marlino at Marlino’s Pharmacy, Wilkes-Barre.

She was a member of St. Therese’s Church, Wilkes-Barre, and Kappa Gamma Pi Honors Sorority, College Misericordia, and loved to travel extensively.

She was preceded in death by her first husband Jack B. Spangenburg, aWorld War II causality, her second husband Anthony J. Marlino on August 2, 2008, great-grandson Aiden Spangenburg, brother Thomas McCaffrey, and sister Kathleen Kirk.  

Surviving are her son, John Spangenburg and his wife Eileen of Wilkes-Barre; daughters Mary Marlino and her husband Greg Young of Boulder, Colorado; Angela Marlino and her husband Michael Schwartz also of Boulder; and daughter Sarah Marlino and her husband Lynn Saunders of Hillsboro, Oregon; ten grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 8:45 am from the Corcoran Funeral Home, 20 South Main St, Plains, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am in St. Therese Church, 25 Old River Road, Wilkes-Barre, with the Monsignor Francis J. Callahan, Pastor, officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Jeanne Blaum, 75 of Laflin Boro, died Sunday evening at her home.

Born in Pittston, she was the daughter of the late Arnold and Emily (Ratchford) Scupoline.

She was a graduate of St. John the Evangelist High School, Pittston, and Scranton State Nursing School.

Jeanne was employed as a Registered Nurse; as a Bond & Security Administrator for the First Bank of Greater Pittston, and last as Tax Collector for Laflin Boro for the last 12 years.

She was a member of St. Maria Goretti Church, Laflin, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, and was a member of St. Maria Goretti Young At Heart Club.

She was preceded in death by her first husband Kenny Johnson, her second husband Francis Blaum, son Kenny Johnson, and brother Arnold Scupoline.

Surviving are her daughter Kim Troy and her husband Michael, Pittston, son Dr. Ron Johnson and his wife Kathy, Pittsburgh, grandchildren Susan Troy Connors, Michael Troy, Jr., Rachel Troy, Megan Johnson, and Christopher Johnson, great-grandchildren Mackenzie Connors, Kaitlyn Connors, and Sarah Connors, sister Marion Sidor, Detroit, Michigan.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, April 18, 2009 at 10:00 am in St. Maria Goretti Church, Laflin, with Father Michael Kirwin, PhD., Pastor, officiating.  Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover.

Clara J. Pinnacoli, 79 of the Hudson section of Plains, Twp., died Sunday morning at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Manor Care Nursing Facility, Kingston, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Born in Pringle, she was the daughter of the late George and Anna (Metar) Bellack. She was a graduate of Pringle High School, and was employed as a machine operator for Frieder’s Cigar of Wilkes-Barre. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Hudson.

She was preceded in death by her brother George Bellack. Surviving are her husband of 58 years Americo (Jack) Pinnacoli, Hudson; son Frank Pinnacoli and his wife Sharon, Hudson; grandchildren Frank Pinnacoli, Jr. and his wife Carisa, Jessica Pinnacoli, and Atty. Stephen Pinnacoli; great-grandsons Frank Pinnacoli, III, and Joseph Pinnacoli; sister Dorothy Lutchko, Plains; nieces and nephews.

Ernest “Gow” Chiucchi, 79 of the Keystone section of Plains, Twp., died Wednesday evening at Geisinger Wyoming Valley after suffering a heart seizure at home.

Born in Keystone, he was the son of the late Ernest and Maria (Gaggiotti) Chiucchi.

He attended Plains Twp. schools and was an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for wounds he received during combat.  He was employed for Addy Asphalt of Keystone until his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his brother Charles Chiucchi, sisters Josephine Paciotti, Regina Blandina, and Santina Chiucchi.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, the former Doris Howe, son James Chiucchi and his wife Gloria, Plains, daughter Debbie Rutkoski and her husband Joseph, Larksville, grandchildren James Chiucchi, Jr. and his wife Missy, Jillian and Jeffrey Chiucchi, Joseph and Matthew Rutkoski; sisters Jenny Segreto, Spring Hill, FLA, and Marie Ulicny, Keystone, several nieces and nephews.

Marion (Lois) Knelly, 82 of the Parsons section of Wilkes-Barre, passed away Friday morning at the inpatient unit of Hospice Care of the VNA, Heritage House, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Marion (Millar) Knelly.

She was a graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, class of 1944.

Lois was employed for the Federal Government working at the Pentagon from 1944-1947; she was office manager for Burgmeyer Brothers and Hall’s Transit Company from 1947 to 1967 and was also associated in the Grocery business with her brother Jack at Knelly’s Market, Wilkes-Barre, retiring in 2000.

Lois was a member of Parsons Primitive Methodist Church, a former member of Serve Your City, and worked on her high school class reunion committees.  Lois loved to travel and made several trips to her mother’s homeland of County Antrim, Northern Ireland to visit cousins residing there.  She also traveled to Portsmouth, England, Nova Scotia & Quebec, Canada, and Alaska.  She enjoyed spending time at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, where she traveled every summer for the past 20 years.  She loved to read, work QRYPTOQUIP, and crossword puzzles.

She was a kind, compassionate, and caring person.  She put everybody first and devoted her life to her family and friends. 

She was preceded in death by her sister Caroline (Joan) Gruver. 

Surviving are her brother Jack Knelly, Sister Beverly Wychock, and caregiver Carolyn Fisher, all of Parsons, numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews, and the joys of her life were her Miniature Schnauzers Daffy, Becca, and Madi.

Elmer L. Honeywell, 86 of Plains Twp., died Wednesday morning at Guardian Elder Care Center, Nanticoke.

Born in Shavertown, he was the son of the late Norman & Ethel (Roberts) Honeywell.

He was an Army Veteran of World War II and was employed as Head Tool and Dye Maker at Muskin Manufacturing, Wilkes-Barre, until his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Ellen Marie Honeywell, son Joseph Honeywell, Brother Wilson Honeywell, sisters Hazel Lohman, Genevieve Price, and Martha Newberry.

Surviving are his wife the former Anne Serafin, Plains; daughter Judy Bonomo, Miners Mills, son Norman Honeywell, Laflin; 9 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late John and Rose Montone Jump.

She was a member of St. Mary’s of the Immaculate Conception Church, Wilkes-Barre. 

Geraldine was employed for Norton’s Dress Shop of Wilkes-Barre and Volunteered at St. Mary’s Church.  She was a member of the altar and rosary society and was a Minister of Hospitality. 

She was preceded in death by her husband James, Sister Colonel Katherine Jump, Brothers William, Arthur and State Representative James Jump. 

Surviving are her son James Jr., Wilkes-Barre, Daughter Angela, Wilkes-Barre, Grandson Vincent and his wife Lisa Azat, Mt. Top, Great Granddaughter Jessica Lynn, nephews and nieces.

Sophie M. Andreeko, 92 of Wilkes-Barre, died Wednesday afternoon at her home.

Born in Plains, Twp., she was the daughter of the late Carl and Sophie (Rajs) Falchek.

Sophie was a graduate of Plains Memorial High School, class of 1934, and was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Church, Plains.

She was owner and operator along with her husband Andrew of Andreeko Photo Print Company of Wilkes-Barre.  She was also a member of the Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce, The Polish Union, The Polish Club of Wilkes College, and the Quota Club of Wilkes-Barre.

She was preceded in death by her husband Andrew Andreeko in 1962; brothers Frank and Dr. Joseph Falchek; sisters Irene Price, Catherine Falchek, and Josephine Lesiak.

Surviving are her son Andrew Andreeko, Hazleton; daughter Arlene Pasonick and her husband Michael, Plains, Twp.; 6 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; brothers Walter Falchek, Kingston, and Thaddeus Falchek, Philadelphia; several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Sophie’s caregivers Katie and Merab and the visiting nurses from Hospice Care of the VNA.

Violet (Vicki) Distefano, 87 of Edwardsville, Pennsylvania and formerly of Hoboken and Lyndhurst, New Jersey, died January 17, in the inpatient unit of Hospice Care of the VNA, Heritage House, Wilkes-Barre.               
                          
Born in London, England, she was the daughter of the late John & Kathleen (Dokes) Robotham.

She was employed as a seamstress in the garment industry in Hoboken, NJ and was a member of the I.L.G.W.U.

Vicki was a member of St. Francis Church, Hoboken, and was President of the Mother’s Guild and was active for many years in numerous church functions and activities including the weekly Bingo.

She was preceded in death by her sister Doris.

Surviving are her husband of 65 years Salvatore (Steve) Distefano; sons Michael Distefano and his wife Suzanne, Stillwater, PA, and Glen Distefano, Lyndhurst, NJ; grandchildren Michelle and Michael, Jr., great-grandchildren Christopher and Hannah; brother John; sisters Ivy, Jean, and Eileen, all of England.

Mary was preceded in death by her Husband, Joseph; Daughter, Adele Alexanderian, Son Paul Sindaco; Granddaughter, Nancy Alexanderian; Grandson, Paul Sindaco; Brothers; Joseph, Louis and Anthony Bernardi; Sister; Jennie Minichello and Infant Sister, Adele Bernardi.

Carl E. Krubitzer, 76, of Plains Township died Tuesday morning at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. 

Born in Swoyersville, he was the son of the late William and Adella Blinstrub Krubitzer. 

Carl was a graduate of Swoyersville High School and was an Air Force Veteran serving with the 2317 Air Transport Squadron and he also served with the Army National Guard for three years.  He worked many years for General Cigar Company, Kingston. 

He was a member of Sacred Heart Slovak Church, Wilkes-Barre and a member of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association. 

Carl enjoyed Hunting, Fishing and Photography and was an avid model aircraft builder.  He enjoyed attending Air shows and reading military history.  Carl was a very caring person who always cared about the best interests of others.    

Surviving is his wife of 39 years the former Helen Kunec, Plains, Brother Edward Krubitzer and his wife Patricia, Dallas, Sister, Judy Reinhard and her husband Robert, Cumberland, MD, Sisters-in-law, Brothers-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.

Edward J. Carroll 74, of Laflin died Friday at Hospice Community Care, Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre.Born on May 15, 1934 in the Heights section of Wilkes-Barre, he was the son of the late Joseph and Josephine Kubicki Carroll. He was a 1951 graduate of GAR High School where he was on the wrestling team. He was employed by Verizon for 30 years as an installer and switchman before he retired in 1996. He was a member of St. Maria Goretti Church, Laflin and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. Edward was an avid fisherman and poker player.  He was a dedicated family man who always put his family first.

He was preceded in death by his son Paul and his sister Dorothy Mulchay.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, the former Iris Klein, son Robert and his wife Debra, Schwenksville, PA; daughter, Kathleen Golya and her husband Joseph of Plains Grandchildren, Jeff and Matt Carroll of Schwenksville, PA and Joe and Katie Golya of Wilkes-Barre.  Sister, Louise Egleberger, Kingston, nieces and nephews. Edward will also be missed very much by his little best friend Snowflake and his new kitten Miss Lilly.

Dominick J. Mancia, 87 of Wesley Village and formerly of Wildwood Crest, New Jersey, passed away Saturday evening in the inpatient unit of Hospice care of the VNA, Heritage House, Wilkes-Barre.

Born in Plains, on November 30, 1921, he was the son of the late Rinaldo and Barbaretta Sorbelli Mancia.

Dominick was a graduate of Plains Memorial High School, Class of 1940 and was also a graduate of Mansfield State Teacher’s College and Vanderbilt University.  He was a dedicated and well-respected Science Teacher and High School Football Coach at Wildwood High School where he also served as Principal.  Prior to his retirement he also served as Superintendent of the Wildwood School System. 

He was a member of the Optimus Club and the Sons of Italy of Wildwood, and was named Outstanding Older American of Wildwood Crest in 2000. 

Dominick was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances McHale Mancia, who died on December 26, 1994.  He is also preceded in death by brothers Frank, Angelo and Ansi Mancia.

He is survived by his sister, Josephine Timonte of Columbia, South Carolina, several nieces and nephews. 

Funeral will be held Wednesday at 9 am from the Corcoran Funeral Home, 20 South Main Street,  Plains with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am in St. Maria Goretti Church, Laflin.  Interment will be in St. Ignatius Cemetery, Pringle.

Mary Rinaldi Answini, 87, of Oakwood Park, Laflin died Tuesday morning surrounded by her family at Hospice Care of the VNA, Heritage House, Wilkes-Barre.

Born on February 13, 1921 in Old Boston, she was the daughter of the late Philip and Philomena (DiGiovanni) Rinaldi. 

She was educated in the Old Boston Elementary School and graduated from Jenkins Township High School, Class of 1938. 

Mary worked many years as a Seamstress in the area Garment Industry and was a member of the I.L.G.W.U.  She also worked as a salesperson for Zalinger’s Department Store.  She was a member of Saint Maria Goretti Church, Laflin. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Answini on March 3, 1971, Sister Regina Pannunzio and Brothers, Anthony, Charles and Frank Rinaldi. 

Mary was a beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and Great-Great-Grandmother.  The loves of her life were her children and grandchildren. 

Surviving are her Daughter Loretta Salvo and her husband Patrick, Laflin, Sons Albert Answini and his wife Mary Ruth, Allentown and Philip Answini and his wife Mary Ann, Dunmore , Grandchildren Michele Occhipinti, Lisa Serafin, Dr. Geoffrey Answini, Christian Answini, Nadine Pizzella and Andrea Neeb, Great Grandchildren Amy Yeager, Joseph and Laura Occhipinti, Amelia and Evan Serafin, Matthew, Isabella, Kaitlyn, Mark and Grayson Answini, Anthony and Angelina Pizzella and Ainslie Neeb, Great Great Grandchildren McKayla Yeager and Joseph Occhipinti, Sister Della Bowman, numerous nieces and nephews.

Margaret (Peggy) Brennan, 88 of Mt. Top died Thursday evening at Davis Manor, Mt. Top.
Born in Plains, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Frances (Ryan) Guinane. 
Peggy was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School, Plains, and was a member of St. Aloysius Church, Wilkes-Barre.

Peggy was employed for the Yale Hook and Eye Company of Newark, New Jersey as a Machine Operator/Inspector until her retirement. 
She was preceded in death by her husband Edward Brennan in 1979, sisters Rosalie Guinane and Jean Milligan. 

Surviving are her son William Freeman and his wife Suzanne, Mt. Top, daughter Elizabeth Ann McGurk, New Windsor, NY, 5 Grandsons, 7 Great Grandchildren, Brother Thomas Guinane and his wife Joan, Somerville, NJ and Sister Jule Ackley, Illion, NY, nieces and nephews. 

Funeral will be held Tuesday at 9:15 am from the Corcoran Funeral Home 20 South Main Street, Plains with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. Aloysius Church, Wilkes-Barre.  Interment will be in Albert Cemetery, Mt. Top.

Irene Gemski, 77 of the Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre, died Thursday afternoon at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township. 

Born in Miners Mills, she was the daughter of the late Metro and Dorothy Kaczur Trabish.

She attended James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre and was a homemaker all of her life.

Irene took great pride and loved to work in her own Greenhouse and to be surrounded by her family.

She and her husband Narcus J. Gemski celebrated their 55th Wedding Anniversary on June 6th 2008.

She was preceded in death by her sisters Ann Tokach, Helen Kavinski and Mary Hoar.

Surviving in addition to her husband Narcus are her  Sons Timothy Gemski and his companion Maria Coolbaugh, Plains and Jamie Gemski and his companion Janice Surrett, Wyalusing, Granddaughter Katelyn Gemski, Brother Charles Trabish, Miners Mills, Sisters Emily Pittarelli, Reading, Terry Boyle, New Jersey and Pearl Wassil, Messhopen, several nieces and nephews. 

Funeral will be held Monday at 9:00 am from the Corcoran Funeral Home, 20 South Main Street, Plains with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am in SS. Peter and Paul Church, Plains.  Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call Sunday from 4 to 7 pm.
